A question. [Cloud says it like it's punctuated with "for you strange people."]

If you don't have a Lifestream keeping your Planet alive, what's holding it together?

I suppose in my case, that would be mana.

[Holy crap we're getting somewhere!]

What's mana? I mean, what's it made of, what's it do, stuff like that.

Mana is the source of all life, magic and energy of the world. Without it, the land will die, and everything on it, as well.

That sounds really similar to the Lifestream. Where does mana come from?

It was brought to the land when the elves planted the great seed in the holy ground of Kharlan. Before the tree sprouted, there was no life on the planet.

[And this is bordering on oddly uncomfortable territory. Hm. Time to poke around a bit- ... ah. Aerith. That brings back some memories.]

[Okay not quite so much like the Lifestream anymore. ...although he's not sure where THAT comes from either.]

Hmm...what about where people go when they die? Do you know where that is?

There isn't really a place. When people die, they die... unless their consciousness is absorbed into something that would keep them trapped, otherwise. Though that's delving into details that are... not quite related to the subject.

Oh.

Then it's not really the same thing as the Lifestream at all. Never mind, but thanks.

No, it isn't. But you'll find with a variety of worlds, there are different aspects to it, some with similarities and others with extreme differences. And then... well, you did bring up an interesting thought. There are 'spirit' guardians associated with mana, one of them known to have absorbed souls linked to the tree itself. So there's always a possibility.

[A pause, and then a locked filter:]

Has this been troubling Aerith?

...yeah. I guess you know about the whole Ancient business then, huh?

That's right... we had spoken of it a few times.

Mm.

It's not really a huge deal...just kind of unnerving, I think. She said she'd been able to hear the Planet ever since she was a little girl so I dunno. Maybe not hearing it is kind of like losing a friend.

If it was something she was used to, it's likely the case... having something that you're used to being around suddenly not properly exist can be a difficult adjustment. [They never did find out what it was she had been hearing that time. It probably wasn't best to speak of it now.]

[Yeah please don't tell him that his not!girlfriend was schizophrenic. ...moreso than usual.]

I'll just make sure she talks about it. [Or something.] I'll handle it.
