It's late, late in the night, or maybe early into the morning when Jack wakes up.
He's startled suddenly out of his deep slumber, and he forgets for a moment where he is. Then Kate shifts next to him, her soft hair tickling his face. Then he remembers.
He stands, pulls on a pair of pants and slips into the hall, but not before nabbing a pack of cigarettes from his sock drawer and the lighter he hid in his shirt pocket on the floor. Once outside, he leans against the wall, and lights one up, letting the smoke of a slow death curl up around him.
He was still screwed.
He knew now, definitely, completely, that he loved Kate, and wanted to be with her, and only her, and he'd have to hurt Aeryn again, and it almost ripped his heart in two just thinking about it. There was no way to be gentle about it.
He'd have to just tell her the truth. Though the truth made no sense. I love you, Aeryn...but Kate is who I need, who I want, who I crave.
It hurt him just thinking about it.
He took a long drag from the cigarette, almost dizzying from lack of air, before he blew it out, slow and languidly. He stamped it out, with the heel of his foot, just wincing slightly. He popped a mint into his mouth and slipped back inside, sliding the cigarettes back into the sock drawer and throwing the lighter in the side table drawer.
Slipping back out of his pants, he slid between the sheets, snuggling close to Kate, hoping he wouldn't wake her, and luckily he didn't. She curled up in the crook of his arm and everything felt right.
That was the only reason he could condone hurting Aeryn again. The only one.
