These Long Days

It’s winter now, and the predawn light that gently prods me awake is the same as that of my youth. I don’t open my eyes, instead imagine myself to that lakeside bedroom, the way I could feel the winter calling to me through my window. But my window is grimy, and the noises from the street below betray my imagination, and I open my eyes.
