Video Entry #1

A young girl is seen fixing the camera, the background of the room shaking as she steady’s it on her dresser. She’s seen walking back and sitting in a nearby chair.

“Hey. So yeah, I thought I’d do this since I’m only six - going to be seven real soon - and I speak better than I can write…right now. Plus I think I’ve seen someone do something like this on one of the TV channels here in Paris that was running some old American shows…” She smiles and stands, turning around to show herself off to the camera before sitting back down in her seat, tucking her leg under herself. “I’m Sarah, Sarah Morgan…Well, actually my Daddy’s name is McDonald. No, not like the song…although.” She giggles and shakes her head, continuing on. “Mommy says that women shouldn’t have to take the mans name just because that’s the way things are, she says that women are stronger than men and that’s why she didn’t take Daddy’s name when they got married.”

Sarah’s eyes brighten and she stands, hurrying away from the camera’s view only to come back a moment later with a frame in her hands. She holds it up close to the camera to show off. Three figures can be seen, a woman with long dark hair and a man with hair almost touching his shoulders holding a little girl - who looks like Sarah - on his shoulders as she laughs.

“This is our family. That’s my mommy - her name is Lilah - and she’s very pretty, everyone thinks so. The man holding me is my daddy - his name is Lindsey - I think that my teacher likes him; she keeps asking me if my parents are really together…” She laughs and sets the picture down on her lap. “My family and I live in Paris…well, it’s a small town outside Paris but people like to still call it Paris…I’m not sure why. Well, the city is quite pretty. So let’s see, what else about me...” She bites her lip and tilts her head to the side, thinking. “Oh! I’m reading a new book, I like reading and mommy says she doesn’t know where I get it. Mommy also insists that I speak French whenever possible. It’s pretty but…” Sarah shrugs and continues on. “Right now I’m reading The Illiad. It’s so good, there’s lots of fighting and really neat…” Her eyes light up. “OH! Lookie what Daddy got me.” She hurries over past the angle of the camera again and pops back in, her face real close to the camera. “Shhh, don’t tell mommy.”

The camera shakes a bit and there’s a dragging sound against the carpet as she’s seen slowly coming back into the frame, her nose scrunched up as she struggles with whatever she’s pulling.

“Daddy got this for me, he says his friend Paul? Oh, no, his friend from Nepal sent it to him a time ago. Isn’t it cool? It’s got a double edge and this really cool scrollwork on the handle.” A huge grin crosses her face as she struggles to lift up the sword that is obviously too heavy for her. “Daddy said he is going to teach me when mommy’s not around so I can fight like him one day.” Sarah’s seen twirling around with the sword, making ‘wooshing’ sounds as it trails around with her movements. She stumbles a bit and ends up hitting the camera a moment later with the sword turning the video to snow…
