MARLENE

Golden locks fall upon your brow
Hands held together as if in prayer
She leans over her desk, thinking

The music box stops playing
it is her favourite song- it belongs to
only her- it was made for her

The light of the lamp casts a glow on
her smiling features
The life within her has started to grow
Created out of love

She turns her face towards the door
where she waits
That special one who gave her life meaning
The one who showed her happiness in this
new world

Her clothes are of silk and fine material,
white lace embroidered on her dress

A headband; no- a tiara of white crowns
the blessed head
She is a princess betrothed to the good king of
this (new) land

And yet, it is not the king she
waits for but someone else
She knows she can never truly love
The Duke for
she has fallen in love with someone else
This is “he” whom she waits for

At last, he comes
They are alone- this is her personal retreat
away from the palace
He sees her at her desk and smiles

“Marlene” he croons softly
this young man clad in blue, a sword
by his side

“A knight of the highest honour,
guardian of the unprotected, angel of
the heavens.”
these honours bestowed upon him

Gold hair sway gently as he bows
deeply to his Lady

The unborn child stirs at the delight of
feeling his presence

‘Such is the fate of lovers’ she writes in
her diary, unknown to the rest of the world

‘Why was I born into a royal family? I like him
The Duke- but I love “him.”’ The baby starts
to move again and she gently rubs her growing
tummy

‘He is the one, a soldier of Caeli, an angel.
Every day, every minute I can be with him I am
so happy…’

The pages of her diary fill up quickly, absorbing
all her joys and fears
‘I remember when I first saw him- at the
games I was first reluctant to go to.
He won the battles and declared the winner.
We were young then.’

But another day she confides:
‘…I cannot stand it any longer. I am
betrothed, it is official now.’
Her joy is starting to turn into worry

‘What should I do?’ Forbidden love between the knight
and her, forbidden love for each other

Yet another day she writes:
‘The day is -- of the third -- and the hours are
passing ever so quickly.’
This book of hers exists only in her world
Not even her love knows of her internal pain she
writes down on these pages

‘It has to be. The child is growing and
I can no longer hide it. My handmaidens are
curious. We have both decided that this
is for the best. But why my baby?’ Watermarks
blot the ink- the child will not know its real father

‘The day is coming too close but it
must be. I will marry the Duke of Freid and
no one will ever know of -- of, of this.’
She stutters as she reads what she
has written and collapses on her bed, crying

‘Less than a month to the wedding.
“He is to be one of the two hundred royal guards
present.
There are many others attending-- the whole
kingdom will watch.
I will walk down the aisle in white and when I
pass him my gaze must never stray.
He said he would keep his eyes focused on silence
and look through me.’

The wedding day is the day she will start to
die-- less than two weeks away
A deep sigh escapes her lips

He starts to visit her less but needs to see
her more. His love for her must not
interfere with her inevitable new life
the child--
will never know

“I need to see her one last time.”
The dark clouds overhead run away from
the silver orb in the sky
it has stopped, the rain, but the pain has not

~ * * * ~

Once again they are together but apart
She stays at her desk while he waits by
the door, bows deeply

“I am being sent to -- after the wedding.”
Looking into her eyes is unbearable as he
declares his new assignment

“Right after? So soon?” She asks, he nods

“I understand. Duty.” Her legs shake as she
struggles to stand up

The lovers embrace for possibly the last
time. The music box plays
Both afraid, both have their own predetermined paths
to follow

He shivers in their once warm embrace…
Damn the fates! Must this be another sad
goodbye? He’s lost so many loved ones…

First, his father-- gone to be ruthlessly beaten
and left to die. Next, his only sibling, his
young sister-- disappeared, kidnapped.
His mother; died from a broken heart.
And now…

Marlene also remembers, what her youngest sister
said to her when she left her homeland
To this new life, such a long time ago it
seems
“Be happy, my sister!” she shouts-- a little
girl surrounded by many shades of people
Then she’s gone

Reality check, and he holds her tighter
“Don’t be afraid.”

~ * * * ~

Years pass and the unborn child is now a boy,
a young prince
of Prussian blue eyes and gold hair
Never knowing of the past, no one ever will

Diary locked away where no eyes can see
inside a hidden compartment, music the key
The music box-- secret note-- holds her song

“He” is still a knight but of an even higher
honour and experience
There has no one else since then…

Marlene is now at peace, forever. A young wife
surrendered to Death’s fatal kiss

The youngest sister has also grown… and looks
like her beloved sister both in beauty
and in purity

He looks upon her and is reminded of “she”
he has also seen the child-- his son and
it also reminds him of she

“Is it really you? Allen Schezar, Knight of Caeli?
Mother always talked about you and told me
all of your stories and legends…” the young
Prince asked him, “You’re my hero!”
If only he knew

Eyes full of blinding pain he croons (softly)
under his breath
her name
