Bout of Books 13: Challenge - Bookish Survey

May 11, 2015 19:28

Today is the first day of the Bout of Books. It is my first time participating, though not my first read-a-long. This one is a week long, while Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-long (my first) was, well, one day. I'm hoping to read a lot more this time around.

To start things off is the first daily challenge, the Bookish Survey, and my answers are below.

1. How do you organize your shelves?

For my manga, I organize them alphabetically by title because surnames and first names are in a different order in most Asian cultures. Since I buy my books in America, I'm not 100% sure which order they're printed in, so I find it easier to go by the title. Plus, which name would I alphabetize by, writer or artist? Both are hugely important to a manga.

All other books are organize alphabetically by the author's last name. If it is a compilation, then I go by the last name of the editor. Exceptions to this rule are series like Doctor Who or Star Wars, which are filed under D and S respectively.

2. What is one of your favorite books that is not in one of your favorite genres?

This one is hard because I don't read a lot outside of my favorite genres and I do have a lot of favorite genres. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, though, so I'm going to choose "The Man Who Read Too Much" by Alison Hoover Bartlett.

3. What is the last 5 star book you read?

Saga, Vol. 4, by Brian K Vaughan. The art is very good and the cliffhangers are making me sad that I don't have any more to read at the moment. He really knows how to get the hook in you.

4. What book are you most excited to read during the readathon?

I want to read more of "The Rook" by Dan O'Malley. It is a gripping story about an amnesiac who needs to figure out who she was, who she is, and who is responsible for it. It takes place in a world where Her Majesty's Supernatural Secret Service keeps that world from ordinary people.

5. What book do you recommend the most?

I recommend any Betty Smith book besides A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. That book gets a lot of hype and while I do love it, a lot of people don't even realize that she wrote three other amazing novels.
