So, I was looking over lists of Doctor Who episodes since 2005 (because I do awesome, special things in my spare time) and I saw some patterns. I'm not claiming that any of this is new or revolutionary, but I found it interesting to think about...

Loosely Organised Numbers and Patterns )
I think you're right about Amy and Rory - we do tend to get big lumps of information about them rather than the constant drips we got from Jackie and Mickey about Rose.
I don't think they'll ever do a main companion as male. I think they should because it would be interesting, but I don't think they will. Sticking to a gender balance, and all that. Have we ever had a completely female-free TARDIS? My Classic Who knowledge is a little shakey, but I don't think we have. It would be awesome, though. I feel a little bit like they wouldn't be able to do any character development with it - "oh look, it's a guys night in the TARDIS, look at them being blokeish and funny, ha ha ha" seems about all we'd get. Maybe that's a little harsh.
Speaking of gay jokes, you know what would be funny? If our fantasy male companion was gay, but was a) completely not interested in the Doctor and b) not out to shag everything in sight. I mean, I like Jack, but I don't feel you need that character repeated. After all the fuss Eleven in particular has been getting from Amy, River, and various other female characters, I can just imagine him being slightly disappointed...

Yes, I quite like the idea of Eleven having a good male companion who wasn't interested in him. Especially after Craig, I feel that this Doctor needs that sort of companionship, and friend to go on fun adventures with. It might be refreshing. It also wouldn't hurt if he were an alien, and not from the 21st century, but I don't expect everything.
In relation to the variety of locations and time periods, I think Earth is always going to be favoured because it's our world. We connect the best to it. What I wouldn't mind is to have more stories that stretch across one or two episodes, and not just as season finales. I've been watching a little bit of ClassicWho and I find that I like the storytelling style. Moffat has the skill to link all episodes within his seasons together, but I'm a sucker for developing deep characters and plots.

It's the same for me, I've always found some way to relate with Rose, Martha and Donna because of the background information we've been given. With Amy, the only "background information" I've been able to relate to is how much waiting she's done and it's just not enough, especially since the Doctor caused it and we don't really get to see how it affected her outside of her relationships with the Doctor and Rory. The only other thing we really saw about her background was growing up with her "childhood fantasy" of her Raggedy Doctor but again, only in two episodes in relation to people other than Rory and the second time was really only for a few seconds at her wedding (their 'oh, not this again!' comments) and then he showed up and we didn't see any of their reactions! It went right from Amy greeting him to him dancing at their reception!
Honestly, at times it feels like I know and understand Craig better than Amy and Rory and he was only in two episodes whereas we're going to have 2 1/2 seasons/series with Amy and Rory before they leave :\

Yeah, they'd probably be worried about how many girls would want to watch a show without a main female character, unfortunately :\ I think, though, maybe a good compromise would be to have the Doctor and a female companion, bring on a permanent non-related male companion (like they did with Rose and Jack) then have the female leave for whatever reason and perhaps have one episode with just the Doctor and the male companion before they find the next "right" female companion to bring into the mix. Maybe even a failed attempt a la Adam - we haven't really had enough failed attempts, either. We've had the Doctor flat out saying no (Christina), the Doctor wanting to bring them on board but they died before he could (Lynda, Reinette), them saying no from the off (Donna in Runaway Bride and that was how it was originally going to end, Jackson Lake), etc. but not someone who agrees and then for some reason decides after maybe one or two more outings after the adventure during which they met that it's not for them - or at least not in the New Series. Again, not great with Classic XD

And the attention Nine and Ten got too - especially since Eleven bragged in the last Christmas special about a tree fancying him and that happened to Nine. It'd be a lot of fun since we know his ego is a bit inflated from Let's Kill Hitler when he turned to Amy and was all indignant with the whole 'you never said I was hot?!?' thing. Ah, Eleven, I love you for that lol
