The New York Times Week in Review section had a nice little backgrounder today on the Peace Prize.

Bottom line: Long ago the committee that awards the prize decided that the criteria in Nobel's will--“the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding of peace congresses”--had pretty much become irrelevant and that the Prize should instead be awarded for work toward some sort of social justice, a “Norwegian version of Western liberal internationalism,” in the words of the long-time director of the Noble Institute in Oslo.

The committee that picks the winner is chosen completely by the Norwegian parliament. And, duh, says the article, the people who award it hope it will have political impact.
