"Even if I tried, could you be less than an addiction?"

Dec 31, 2006 16:48

Yesterday's snow has not melted.  I am asquee.  (I do need to bust out my boots with actual traction, though -- residential sidewalks and all.)

When it first started snowing yesterday, I padded downstairs in my slippers, holding my toast, and stood in the doorway of the porch watching the snow.  I felt like I was in a British film or something.  About an hour later the snow was coming down in large clumps and I put on real shoes and stood outside in the snow for a bit just because I could.

A little while later, eard_stapa called and I headed down to the Square to meet up with her, Miranda, and hedy.  We ate at Anna's.  Yeah, I pretty much only go out to eat when I'm with visiting people.  I also fail at tour guide, though in my defense my Square isn't exactly noted for Stuff To Do (I remembered after they'd left that there is a bowling alley, but hello not my thing).

Browsing at the Goodwill, one of us picked up a cassette set called "Speak Irish Today" or something.  One of the first conversations picked out was something about tea.  I commented that in my library book Portuguese in 10 minutes a day, the exchange which introduces you to the language is: O que é isso? / Isso é vinho. / Eu quero um copo do vinho.

I think it actually is time for me to go back to work, as this lack of structure is starting to cause negative behavior patterns (staying up late eating lots of chocolate and watching mediocre crime dramas).

Oh, and I think one of my back teeth is fucked up.  Guess I deserve that for not having gone to a dentist in years.  (Yes, I totally admit that I kind of am my grandmother in certain ways.)  Ah, things to do on Tuesday.  Making dentist and doctors appointments were in fact on my New Years Resolutions/Intentions/Whatever list -- part of the broader "take better care of my body" plan.At Tara in this fateful hour
I place all Heaven with its power
And the sun with its brightness,
And the snow with its whiteness,
And the fire with all the strength it hath,
And the lightning with its rapid wrath,
And the winds with their swiftness along their path,
And the sea with its deepness,
And the rocks with their steepness,
And the earth with its starkness:
All these I place
By God's almighty help and grace
Between myself and the powers of darkness!
-"Patrick's Rune" from A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle
I've seen a number of people commenting about how glad they'll be to see 2006 go.  Gotta say, I had a pretty fine year.  (Okay, Joyce class has been less than stellar, and I'll think seriously before taking a fall semester course again but hey, you win some you lose some.)

I got my hiring papers in January and still like my job as we come around to January again.  Had a bit of a shaky autumn, but am doing fairly well.  Learned to be way much less of a control-freak ball-of-stress (which also translated heavily into social interactions).

Got an apartment situation I'm generally happy with, had a successful apartment-warming and lots of lovely friend visits (including ones not actually at my apartment).  Have been cultivating communities of good people (CAUMC, the HBS girl posse, Eric, Katie).

Plus, dude, WriterCon.  Made of awesome in so many ways.  Plus of course the other moments of fannish awesomeness.  Oh, and I went to lots of theatre and practically lived at the MFA the first half of the year, mostly watching foreign films.

Last year I said: "wow, a year is a long time.  So many of these I feel like I wrote so long ago."  I reiterate that this time around.  (I'm also reminded that I still owe sequels for some of the stuff I wrote in 2005.  Sigh.  Oh, 2005, when I wrote stuff of real substance.  Definitely my best fic-writing year.  Though I am pleased with my two ficathon pieces from the beginning of 2006, and froplay was kind of awesome.  I suspect I'm not up for femslash07, though.)
