Best thing in the world to write what you want to. (and yeah, why has the best stuff I've been reading been termed crackfic? ok, so I know *why* but...it really is possible that people can use cliche's well. It think that's why they became cliches.)
And Chekhov? Is marvelous. Cherry Orchard isn't my favorite but it's good, and the 'not favorite' might be a bit influenced by the horrid Detroit production I saw (they *smoked*. grrr.). Chance to see you + lovely russian playwright? can we? (huhhuh, can we, mum, pleeeeeeeease? though...thesis. but who knows.)
My default definition of crackfic is "You must have been on crack to have thought of/written that," and so much time in fandom has meant the bar has been raised [for me anyway] as to what provokes that response rather than "I never would have thought of that; rock on." I want someone to do a good post about defining crackfic. (Clichefic seems to me like a different thing, though some crack ideas probably become cliches in certain fandoms.)
Cherry Orchard is over January, so I figure a weekend during J-term shouldn't kill your thesising too much. (One hopes I'll get to see you before then -- like over the summer -- but obviously seeing you more is of the good.)
with Stargate Atlantis fic (which is basically all I'm reading at the moment) people keep calling things like 'aliens made them do it' crackfic. But your definition makes more sense. I dunno. If it's well written is it *possible* for it to be crackfic? How weird would it have to be, as long as someone could make it plausable?
Summer is...difficult. Though I would really like to see you. I get home June Tenth and then leave for Ann Arbor the 29th...by the time I get back to NY it's nearly time for school. My twin already wants me to visit her in NYC in June and...gyah. summer's crazy. But I'm working on how I'll get to see people. Some weekend during J-term, though, would be great. And yeah, definitally do-able.
I was trying to come up with examples of crackfic scenarios, and mostly I was coming up with AUs and crossovers, which didn't seem right. I've never seen SGA and only see the fandom peripherally through my flist, but I've heard SGA is full of crackfic (see also: SGA as acid in the fandom drugs); like, Rodney was turned into a pink sparkly pony or something (I swear someone mentioned something like this once, and Googling for SGA crackfic I find Rodney-turned-into-a-dolphin).
Oh I totally forgot that you were going to Ann Arbor over the summer. If nothing else, you'll be more accessible for e-mail/phone once you're back in my timezone at school :) And yeah, J-term is good.

Also, I have mad love for a story where Giles falls head over heels for a penguin.

I've gotta say, that sounds like a scenario I am unlikely to be sold on, though anything's possible.
