"Dirty Girls" (7.18)

Apr 17, 2003 19:22

Long "previously-on" montage, including the first appearance of The First. And we got a Faith montage thanks to Andrew.

"They're my boys. Not my blue-eyed boys." Yep, Caleb is creepy. Did anyone else think when he was saying, "Tell the Slayer, not the other one, the real one," that he was referencing the fact that Buffy is no longer the "real" Slayer? But no, apparently Buffy is the "real" Slayer and Faith is just the "other" one. ("Are you the bad Slayer now? Am I the good Slayer now?") I hope we find out in the next episode what the deal is with the brand he put on the Potential.

"This is my blood..." Hmm... vamping as a form of unholy communion.

What was the name of Caleb's vineyard cabin? Looked like Sunny Valley Stewards or something, but most of it was obscured by trees. Speaking of names, i have been reminded that names are important, so i am linking to handy citation for the Biblical Caleb. (thanks, carpdeus) "Not much for the Good Book." "Paul had some good stuff." This of course identifies Caleb as evil because Paul is the most troubling of all the Gospel writers with his apparent mysogyny and all. "The Cain to her Abel. No offense to Cain." Hmm. Cain and Abel are the famous first children of Adam and Eve. (Hmm, possible reference to First Slayer stuff?) I heart the Bible online.Genesis 4 (NIV)

Cain and Abel

1 Adam [1] lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. [2] She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth [3] a man." 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD . 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." [4] And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
"I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
13 Cain said to the LORD , "My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so [5] ; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, [6] east of Eden.
17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of [7] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed [8] a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times."
25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, [9] saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
At that time men began to call on [10] the name of the LORD .
Footnotes

1 4:1 Or The man
2 4:1 Cain sounds like the Hebrew for brought forth or acquired .
3 4:1 Or have acquired
4 4:8 Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Masoretic Text does not have "Let's go out to the field."
5 4:15 Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew Very well
6 4:16 Nod means wandering (see verses 12 and 14).
7 4:22 Or who instructed all who work in
8 4:23 Or I will kill
9 4:25 Seth probably means granted .
10 4:26 Or to proclaim

Inspired by zzrg we could talk about plants in this story. White-text in case anyone hasn't seen Angel episode 4.19, "The Magic Bullet" (i.e., the episode which aired in the U.S. last night). (Highlight the following to read it.) "The hunt for Fred was getting a little Invasion of the Body Snatchers. That is always a scary. Another plant like quality is Jasmine's propensity to eat people hole a la Little Shop of Horrors: Feed me Connor, Feed me! Wait a minute, she is also named after a plant. Am I missing something? Fred's encounter with the finger food demon had to be significant, but don't know why. Of course the demon did lie about being a vegetarian. (Plants again.)"

So, either Jasmine is The First, or she's a power (we caught the bit about being drawn to power and all, right? because it's all about Power) competing with The First for domination of this world. Either way, Mal subordinate to Zoe = wrongness.

"Shit went down," as Ria said. I was excited for mucho Faith/gang interaction, but i think it worked well just having her added on, another weapon in the war, with the requisite "We're wary of you" (When Andrew was saying, "Always be on your guard around her. She's a killer. Never forget that." did anyone else want one of the blunt Potentials to say, "Aren't you a killer, too?"). And the Spike bonding. I was like, "Shag. Now. Please." "I used to be... dangerous. I'm better now."

Rona: "I came here for protection." Word. No one signs up for this fight. Thrust upon you and all that.

"So you're the one who sees everything." Shout-out to Xander/Dawn scene at the end of "Potential." And after Xander's inspiring "Buffy cares" speech, which was based in his seeing her for 7 years. But EW! And aw, reversal of the resolve-face-Willow scene ("Becoming Part 2").
