or, a post that probably belongs on tumblr but just seems a little too long and insubstantial for that when tumblr is all about the short and insubstantial and the long and substantial.
I caught up on Once Upon a Time after forgetting to watch the last three episodes of last season. It's not that I wasn't interested. I just wasn't, well, that interested. I enjoy the show for what it is, though, even if what it is is far from perfect, and the season premiere was a lot of fun. I'm just really glad Mulan/Aurora is a thing now.
I also finally saw the first two episodes of Elementary, which were downright inspiring. To see a show that seems to be fairly successful so far treat its leading lady with so much respect is just so refreshing, and as an aspiring TV writer, seeing that a show like this can get made at all is encouraging. It's an adaptation that's clearly in a different conversation with its source material than Sherlock, for example. It's a Sherlock Holmes for a new era rather than the same Sherlock Holmes in a new era.
And over in movie world, Pitch Perfect was brilliant. I was always going to love it because it's feminist comedy with musical numbers, but many of the jokes were original and clever, and it balanced female friendship and crude humor really well, even if I could have lived without the recurring vomit jokes. I felt honestly happy and engaged the entire time I was watching, and while that's not necessarily what I'm looking for from every movie, it was definitely what I wanted from this one.
