recs: avengers

Jul 24, 2012 01:15

I've spent three months reading at least half the Avengers fic posted on AO3. For some reason, I decided making this list would be easier or better than just bookmarking my favorites.

It was not, but here are the results anyway.

(Note that I've read some excellent fics that don't appear on this list--I can probably dig some of them up if you want more! This includes other pairings, because I read everything, and anything written before the movie, which I didn't include here.)

Steve/Tony (and Clint/Coulson)

In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) and Phil Coulson's Case Files of the Toasterverse by scifigrl47

The first two stories in the series were written pre-movie, but the author works movie canon into the third story. Regardless, it's a fantastic read.

Tony finds out that when it comes to Avengers, you can't adopt just one.

There aren't words for how much I like this fic.

Steve/Tony/Pepper/Clint/Coulson

Enough To Go Around by sabinelagrande
Tony wants to see Steve break a sweat; it just takes one hell of a workout.

Reading this much porn is almost physically exhausting.

Bruce/Tony/Pepper

and make it seem effortless by daisysusan
It's a surprisingly comfortable relationship that develops between them.

The one that made me ship it, and now they're my OT3.

Brain, Tongue and Heart by screamlet
After the failed debut of Loki as supreme ruler of all humans, the Avengers left on Earth piece themselves together using JARVIS, The Sound of Music, science, war games, and anything else they can find.

Bonus Clint-Natasha-Steve friendship!

Living Dangerously by Penknife
Bruce visits Tony and Pepper. They're very hospitable.

Tony/Bruce-heavy. Also, hot.

"And so," Tony concludes triumphantly, "you owe it to science, to yourself, and to the people of New York City to have tons of hot awesome monster sex with me."

Well-written and clever, but warning for Hulked-out sexytimes.

Steve/Tony/Bruce

Head/Heart/Lungs by triedunture
After the invasion, Steve Rogers visits Stark Tower to apologize; he was wrong about Iron Man, and he's man enough to admit it...if Tony would just let him. Luckily Bruce Banner is there to translate Stark Talk for Steve, and the three of them fall into a strange kind of routine. For once in his life, Steve feels like he might belong. But how can he belong when he wants...that?

If you're looking for good Stark Spangled Banner, this is it. I love the natural feeling of the interactions between the three.

Clint/Natasha

Christmas in St. Petersburg by Amerou
Agent Clint Barton, codename Hawkeye, is sent to kill a target known only as the Black Widow - but Clint makes a different call.

Exactly the backstory I was craving.

Of Languages by QueenRiley
After a life spent immersed in secrets, it was difficult to let go and learn to live without them.

Really lovely. Features the rest of the team to a satisfying degree.

To Be Modified As Necessary by ignipes
They only need ten rules to ensure (relatively) peaceful cohabitation.

Wonderful Steve-Natasha friendship and some Clint/Natasha, Steve/Bucky, and Natasha/Bucky on the side.

and here's a quiet little pimp for my own fic, lessons

Natasha/Clint/Coulson(/Pepper)

Four people, six first kisses.

I ship every combination of these people, and I was so glad to see Pepper included!

The Codes in My Words by brilligspoons
There are too many variables in the situation, so Phil tells Pepper about a cellist and a few weekends spent in an apartment on the Upper East Side and long, slow strolls through Central Park in the evening, and none of these things are technically untrue.

I just love these three.

They circle each other for years. It's not inevitable, but it might as well be.

The style here is wonderfully appropriate to the film--not too formal or poetic, but not flippant either--and the relationships are fully believable.

Steve/Natasha

Kick Off Your Sunday Shoes by leiascully
Natasha thought it was a shame that Steve had never been dancing (among other things).

Super hot, super cute.

Moving the Furniture by copperbadge
Steve thinks about sex a lot, and he'd like to have some, if he could just stop being an idiot around the people he'd like to have it with.

I'm surprised by how much I enjoy these two together, especially as friends with benefits.

Thor/Jane/Darcy

"Hierarchical triple systems comprise a close binary and a more distant component." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

I'm not typically all that into Darcy POV or Darcy-as-fandom-bicycle, but this really worked for me. Nice Darcy/Jane relationship with the believable addition of Thor.

Everyone/Everyone

we're gonna have a good time by jessalae
"TMZ has enough fun spreading rumors about just the two of us; just think of all the trouble they could cause if they knew I'd invited over all your superhero friends to fuck you until you scream."

We all need more Tony/everyone in our lives.

Five Ways to Get In Touch with Your Inner Mild-Mannered Scientist by thingswithwings
sleep, smash, sparring, science, sex.

This one includes the Hulk and an orgy at the same time. If that's not your thing, skip the last part, but you don't want to miss the rest.

Five times the Fabric And Bio-Uniform Logistic Operations Underground Support team hated their job, and one time they loved it.

Delightful.

In Great Transition by vain_glorious
One by one, the Avengers move into Stark Tower.

Perfect Tony characterization and a lovely handling of nervous tension between Bruce and Natasha.

It Starts Out Like an A-Word (As Anyone Can See) by Amy
This fic is brought to you by the letter Y, the number 12, and the Avengers' decision to help fix what Loki and the Chitauri did to destroy parts of Manhattan. (Mostly that last part.)

Hands-down my favorite Avengers fic ever. Oh, and it's a Sesame Street crossover.

The Adventures of Captain America and Phil, by Phil Coulson, Age 7 by dizmo
A gripping tale of action, adventure, and tremendous bravery... that will never be seen by the Avengers, at least if the author has anything to say about it.

Too cute for words.

well, let the drum beat drop by jonesandashes and pollyrepeat
Pepper leaves, and there's no more pizza, and Thor's already talked about Jane, and Tony suspects all of them realize, abruptly and simultaneously, that they actually have no idea what to do now. He is, in fact, pretty certain that they're just a few minutes away from someone deciding to say something about the weather. It's probably going to be him.

Funny and just a little dark, the ideal Avengers fic.
