I'm watching Friday Night Lights season one, and despite not really knowing any rules of football (ie: what is a touchdown? IDK seems important?; what does a quarterback do? your team has 4 chances to move the ball 10 yards. if they do that then get get *another* 4 chances. You do this going down the whole field. You want to reach the opposite end of the field, because that is how you score points and win the game. This is the marked off "end zone". Often there is a logo or something painted on the field down there. carrying the ball into the end zone is a "touch down" and worth 6 points.
It is the other team's turn if you fail to go 10 yards in 4 attempts. Also, When one team scores, it is the other team's turn.
The other team will try to stop you from moving the ball down the field and scoring. They do this by tackling your dudes to the ground or catching the ball meant for one of your team's players.
There are more rules, but this is all you need to know.
seriously, it's actually not hard. people make it seem harder. If they had effing TOLD US THIS in second grade instead of going into "defense and offense plays" and assuming we all knew, I would not have have been confused until I was 15 and the lady gym teacher said "look. it works like this." and all the girls went "...oh. that's...stupidly easy."
