The look of utter disgust on Brian Joubert's face when the modest, quiet Jeffrey Buttle stole his glory at the World Championships this weekend will go down as one of my all-time favorite skating memories.

Ahhh. It feels good. <333 Jeffrey Buttle.

And WTF? What rational person would have bothered doing a quad after Joubert left so much space? ( Read more... )

MAN I love me some Buttle. I'm so bummed that I missed it, and missed the Johnny Weir situation. What happened?

Oh, now you've got me started. Very dangerous! Haha. Well, basically what happened was going into Worlds there were at least six insanely good men--and Takahashi had just put the highest score from the new system on the record books. He'd won at four continents (the equiv of the europeons for cananda/US/asia) by *thirty* points. There were Lambiel and Joubert, former champions and easy to put on the list. There was also the new European champion, who'd been on the podium at worlds last year... and both Weir and Lysacek were getting lots of press because US competitors always do. Then there was Buttle, who wasn't even *mentioned* anywhere since he'd lost his national title to a newbie 17 year old at nationals ( ... )

... So then in the free skate, Buttle rocked and won by a couple points. Weir and Takahashi were a couple points behind him, but they had both done impressive performances. Joubert bombed to sixth place and Lambiel was not doing particularly well either. Meanwhile, the press completely ignored Buttle's lead because, to be honest, it's not unusual for him to do well in the SP. I do think they're feeling a little bit dumb now, though ( ... )

From Icenetwork.com --

Weir was Buttle's partner in crime in bringing down the favorites at worlds. His artistic short program nearly matched that of the Canadian, and while he did attempt a quad in the free, his type of skating certainly relates more to the new world champ than to Joubert and the rest of the top three.

*DIES* ("rest of the top three" references the official rankings -- since Jeffrey skipped out a lot the last couple seasons, his cumulative ranking is technically lower)
