Happy 4th of July!
Oh, 1776! How I love you so! The music, the characters, the clashing personalities the slash...It's just so fascinating and entertaining. I feel like it's rather underrated as a musical, which is a bit sad because it is so good. The film treats all of the characters with dignity, but it still pokes a bit of fun at them at times ("Franklin, I am not going to stand around and listen to you quote yourself!").
Also, I should not want to slash historical characters, but this musical makes me want to ship Adams/Jefferson/Franklin. I could never actually read it, but they're just so slashy. Example
Anyway...
Favorite songs:
The first song (I don't know the name---it goes "For God's sake, John, SIT DOWN!!!").
"The Lees of Old Virginia"
The song about who's going to write the Declaration ("Mr. Adams, you are driving me to HOMICIDE!")
"He Plays the Violin"
"Hey Mama, Look Sharp"
"The Egg"
"Is Anybody There?"
I can't really list it as one of my favorites, since it's rather disturbing and a bit frightening, but "Molasses to Rum" is pretty powerful (probably because the actor has such a strong voice)---it shows how complicated and problematic the slave trade was. I wish they didn't gloss over Jefferson's hypocritical views on slavery, though. Ah, well.
Still, Adams/Jefferson/Franklin, OT3. ;) ...I'm going to hell, aren't I?
Ironically, I'm using an icon with a British person in it. Huh.
