Day 09 - Best scene ever: Firefly, "Jaynestown"
I wish I still had a Jayne icon. Ah, well, interests change, so here's the Bear Jew---I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't love Donny if I hadn't loved Jayne, who I'm pretty sure was the first big, crazy, brutish lug that I ever truly enjoyed.
I remember discovering Firefly in August 2008 without knowing a lot about the story, except that all of the planets looked like the Old West, and I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it, but I think "Jaynestown" was the episode where I really started to love it. There was Simon pretending to be a rich merchant, then the scene with the statue ("I think they really captured his...essence."), and as soon as they got to the bar and the camera panned over the man with the guitar, I knew Jayne would have a song about him. I didn't know how it would go or what the lyrics would be, but it was just a gut feeling. This song exceeded my expectations: it was catchy, memorable, and hilarious. I just love the whole scene because it seems like something the mudders do on a regular basis to keep their spirits up, while Serenity's crew looks so horribly uncomfortable. To quote Simon, "This is what going mad feels like."
