This post is most of a transcript from an email from GetUp. If you're not aware of the existence of this organisation please check it out at http://www.getup.org.au/

We thought long and hard about sending you this email, because we like to promote the idea that our individual actions make a difference. But we have to be honest about the Government's current climate policy.

Under their current proposal, action you take at home to reduce energy - like changing to efficient light bulbs and appliances or installing solar hot water - will not reduce Australia's total greenhouse emissions further than the Government's weak target of 5-15%. It will even make it cheaper for industry to increase their own emissions.

That's outrageous, and unfair - but we still have an opportunity to fix this flaw. So we've booked a full-page ad in tomorrow's The Australian to let people know about this scandal.

Check out the ad - and sign the petition that underpins it: "Kevin Rudd, do your bit to fight climate change and let me do mine"

This is about more than policy detail. The Rudd Government's scheme insults the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in tackling climate change. Even the Government's own action, like investing in insulating Australia, will only serve to reward polluters, not cut our emissions further than their weak 5-15% target.

What the Government doesn't understand is that people like you - who are living the change we want to see in the world - have the power to change this country. And with your help we will do just that.

Tomorrow's newspaper advertisement is on behalf of every single one of us who wants to be a part of the solution in the fight against climate change. Let's fix this flaw:

We have come so far. Australians are truly embracing the idea of making a personal difference on climate change, and importantly, this is often the first step towards voting and organising for climate action. We can't let the Government take that crucial community momentum away.
