read, watched, heard, experience: 2012

This was a not an especially productive year in terms of new books read. Turns out that having to study for weekly Anatomy and Physiology tests doesn't leave me much time for as much pleasure reading as I'd like. (And I'm finally a sufficiently mature student that I can--with some effort--prioritize the studying ( Read more... )

You've given me way too much to react to, and yet I have to respond to it all...

Snuff - I immediately thought of the Chuck Palahniuk novel, which made for a good audiobook. I'm sure it's a very different sort of story, but you should read that as well.

The Quantum Thief - Did you/will you read The Fractal Prince as well, or does it stand alone okay? I stumbled across it when looking for titles beginning with Q, but moved alone when I saw that it was the start of a trilogy that hasn't been fully published yet.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower - I have no idea how I felt about this. I had high hopes; not sure why that was, but it's always a bad idea. It didn't grab me as much as I'd hoped, but I don't know that it was bad, really. I probably need to read it again before I can form an opinion, but I'm not in a hurry. You know, the only Palahniuk I've read is Fight Club. I should fix that at some point.

The Quantum Thief--Yes, I think it can stand alone. That is, the book's arc ends, while the bigger story arc continues. You could conceivably stop there and let the bigger story go, if it weren't your cup of tea. And yes, I just finished The Fractal Prince, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this story ends in book three.

Perks: yeah, I hear you. I think it's a pretty flawed work that becomes more so as you examine it. It doesn't go down nearly as deep as the first glance suggests it might.

La piel que habito: seriously. While I'm interested in seeing Almodóvar work in different modes, I don't feel that this was successful. Yes, horror, but I've got issues with how he's looking at agency here.

Avengers: I knew I was short-shrifting all sorts of characters, but eh. And no, it's perfectly okay to have a crush on Loki. I mean, just don't turn your back on him.
