Every so often, I do ridiculous things. Usually, these have good, and somewhat logical* reasons behind them.
Today, I went and bought what liquor I think is useful for stocking a decent home bar.
Because, of course, I might want to entertain at home when I'm settled in up in Portland.
And yes, that's ignoring the fact that I never really got around to stocking a decent bar when I lived in San Francisco (well, my favorite cocktail bar was just up the street, after all), or that although I do love me a good cocktail, I don't actually drink all that much.
Anyway.
So, I got a couple of bottles of No. 209 gin, because it's my favorite, a Bay Area spirit that's sometimes hard to find elsewhere (they didn't have it in Seattle this summer, much to my dismay). It's perfect for gimlets and martinis and whatnot, although I suppose I should also pick up a bottle of something else that I feel more comfortable sharing (it's mine!).
A 1.75 of Skyy, because it's cheap and just for mixing. I'll get a bottle of Chopin for sipping sometime later. Or else, run the Skyy through a Brita a dozen times. Apparently, that really does work--even if you start off with Popov, god help you.
St-Germain, because I love me some elderflower liqueur. Amaretto, because it's lovely and useful in the kitchen, just like the St-Germain. Ditto on the Cointreau.
A bottle of Barbancourt, because one should have some tasty white rum handy, and it's the cheapest of the actually good rums. I have a bottle of Zaya already (that was a birthday present), so I'm covered on the dark, too.
Tres Generaciones Reposado, because it's expected. On the whole, I don't actually like tequila that much. But if you're Mexican, I suppose you should have some tequila on hand, and I wasn't going to splurge on the actually pricey stuff.
Some Knob Creek, because while I don't really care for bourbon (or scotch), I do like to be a good host.
Angostura bitters, Rose's Lime and Grenadine, and some Meyer lemon simple syrup, all for when it's called-for. A little bottle of Pama, because it's a pretty bottle and aren't pomegranates supposed to be full of anti-oxidants? Pimm's, because Pimm's. Some ginger mixer British thing that I bought for the lark.
Add all of that to the wine I've got, and I think I've now a fairly decent bar.
Now, I suppose I should find an apartment to keep it all in...
