things read, watched, heard, experienced, Q2

Okay, I'm late on this, but I'm excusing myself because dude, Clarion West.

Also, there's not much. So here it is, sans cuts:

Books:

  • Kraken, China Miéville (Not his best, in that he's tossed in even more ideas and story threads in than usual, so that if he actually cut some out, he'd have a stronger work. That said, it's still damn good.)
  • Steal Across the Sky, Nancy Kress (Interesting ideas, but I would have liked to have seen more done with issues brought up.)
  • The Coyote Kings of the Space Age Bachelor Pad, Minister Faust (Lots of fun to read, and I can't wait until the sequel is eventually out. It was very enjoyable, but it took me ages to read, and I'm not sure why. Every time I picked it up, I'd read a fair amount, but then I'd stop and it would be a while for me to pick it up again. I have that reaction to some books, sometimes, and they're usually good ones--I've been reading White's The Once and Future King like that for years. Anyway, huh.)

Movies & TV:

  • Easy A (I really enjoyed this. I think I <3 Emma Stone.)
  • BearCity (Eh.)
  • Patrik, 1.5 (Charming and adorable.)
  • Chuecatown (Ridiculous, and I'm not sure it pulled it off well enough.)
  • Hanna (Hmph.)
  • Friday Night Lights, Season 5 (Oh, FNL, how I've loved you. I'm glad you ended as you did, though, because if you hadn't, I would have tossed you out the window.)
  • The Bourne Identity (Finally got around to watching it. It was fun.)
  • Jennifer's Body (Turns out I really enjoy watching Amanda Seyfried. She's smart enough to be in on the joke, and that's something I appreciate.)
  • Temple Grandin (Yay, a movie in which Claire Danes acts! That's only about half of them, you know.)
  • Thor (Ridiculous and thoroughly enjoyable.)
  • Bridesmaids (Even more ridiculous and more enjoyable.)
  • Tangled (Sure, there's some issues--it's Disney, after all--but rather less than usual. Enjoyed it.)
  • Howl (Franco!)
  • The Four-Faced Liar (Interesting. It was pretty ambitious and bit off more than it could actually chew, but for the most part, I was okay with it.)
  • Daybreakers (Jesus Christ, why did I bother? Oh, yeah, Ethan Hawke. Damn it.)
  • The People I've Slept With (I thought the lead was great, and I loved her enthusiastic sluthood.)
  • The Last Station (Oh, Helen Mirren, if only you'd love me! By which I mean, this was lovely. And it came with a helping of James McAvoy, aw yeah.)
  • Locked Up (The sex was nice, but on the whole, it was disappointing.)
  • X-Men: First Class (I enjoyed the cameos (and the McAvoy and Fassbender) the most.)
  • Flores de otro mundo (Excellent in its unsentimental sweetness. It's not the best thing, but I enjoyed it a lot, mostly due to the leads.)
  • This American Life, Season 2 (As always, Ira is my hero.)

Music:

  • Entre la ciudad y el mar, Gustavo Galindo (You like the boy-and-his-guitar shtick, produced by Gustavo Santaolalla? Yes, you know you do. Quite good.)
  • Elefante, Elefante (Why hadn't I listened to them before this?)
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix (Sometimes, I'm behind the wagon. Like this. Fun.)
  • 21, Adele (I've gone on about Adele several times in this journal; I'll spare you now.)
  • Only By The Night, Kings of Leon (More and more, Kings of Leon grows on me.)

Spectacle:

  • Quidam, Cirque du Soleil (Fantastic. Not my favorite show, but beautiful. Hated the venue. I prefer to see them under le grand chapiteau.)
  • San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, concert (Turns out, I don't much like choruses.)
  • Yanni, concert (Let me explain: my best friend, T., loves Yanni, and has all the time I've known her--which is going on to half of our lives. So, for her birthday, I got tickets to his show at the Warfield. I would like to point out that this makes me the best friend effver. Also, it was a surprisingly fun show, despite being cheesier than a block of haloumi.)
