applying the fuckmuppet principle

So, the internets (at least some of the particular bits of them that I read) are exploding with the amazing anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant/just in general fail of Elizabeth Moon over in her LJ (e-moon60).

Considering how she just kept digging herself deeper and deeper, to the point where she's so far past reason that willshetterly--Will Shetterly!--is calling her on it, I suppose it's only to be expected that peoples' heads are exploding.

Therefore, I'd like to point out that this is a good time to apply Cat Valente's Fuckmuppet Principle. To wit:

"It's a pretty simple equation, really. Limited lifespan divided by number of books it's possible to consume due to vagaries of money and mortality equals I am not buying your books if you behave like a fuckmuppet in public."

Say goodbye, Elizabeth Moon, to any money you might have made from me. I spend thousands of dollars on books each year; I proselytize the authors and works I like to my friends and family, all of whom do the same. And I also call bullshit when I see it. So: bullshit.

And honestly, your books were on my to-buy list--I read The Deed of Paksenarrion when I was a teen, liked it, and meant to buy your SF after I heard good things about it at WisCon this year, and learning that you'd be a GoH.

Oh, and about that... I'm not sure I'm comfortable with you being one of the Guests of Honor at WisCon next year now that you've spouted all that bigotry. Sure, it's your right to say whatever you want as you'd like, but see the Fuckmuppet Principle above.

It'll also be my right to stand up, turn my back, and walk out of your speech.

Who knows? You might apologize. You might decry the bigotry and nativism and irrationality of your words. You might change your stance to something that doesn't make it so much harder for everyone who is different from what society declares is normative to live in dignity in this country. If you did, I'd probably be willing to rethink my opinion of you.

I'm not holding my breath on you doing that, though.

ethics, wiscon, dignity, fail, asshattery, privilege
