A friend asked if I had read anything particularly good lately.
I answered "Yes!" and told her all about Memoirs of a Master Forger by William Heaney. It's British, written under that byline by Graham Joyce, and will be (re)published in the States this fall by Night Shade Books as How to Make Friends with Demons by Graham Joyce.
It's about love, guilt, and redemption. It's very, very lovely. You should read it. Also, I like the original title MUCH better.
Speaking of things one should read, I finally got around to reading Pride and Prejudice. Like a lot of people, I'm familiar with the story, but just never read the book. Until now. Oh, Jane Austen, how you bring the snark!
I loved it. Sure, issues galore, but yeah--so good, and damn, but I actually felt scandalized by Lydia's actions and boy, did I want to kick Mr. Bennet's ass, so yeah: much delight and well-crafted empathy for people in such a foreign world. (I typed "fun" and then, still touched by the way only the vulgar use that word in Austen's work, I went with "delight." Caramba.)
Anyway, I just wanted to note that, yes, I have been reading stuff that's particularly good. How about you? Got any recs to share?
