It's that time of year when many of us are making a concerted effort to engage in conversations about race, racism, ethnocentrism, privilege, power, and the other issues that cloud our abilities to treat everyone with dignity and equality. In short: what it's like to live in our societies--and how to change it.
So, expect that I'll be writing on these topics. To get you started off on thinking about these issues, and if you should like to participate in IBARW, here are some links that should be useful:
ibarw,the LJ IBARW community's
post on this week. My friend,
sparkymonster's awesome list of links
for clueless white people which are also awesome if you are of color and clueless, or in fact, even if you already have a clue, period. The first link is to Peggy McIntosh's wonderful essay,
White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, which frankly should be required reading.
Because I am a writer of speculative fiction (and a member of it), let me also point you to
The Carl Brandon Society, whose mission it is "to increase racial and ethnic diversity in the production of and audience for speculative fiction."
There's a ton of resources and voices out there. The links above are just a couple of possible starting places.
If you've got something to say about racism, or privilege, or anything that ties into IBARW, please consider sharing it now.
