One of my friends at work is from Japan. She's got an update on the situation, and a plea for donations to Red Cross:
As some of you know, I was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan. Japan is where all of my family lives, and I have many friends throughout Japan including areas that have been devastated by repeated earthquakes and tsunamis. While my immediate family is safe, my heart goes out to the families of the more than 12,000 confirmed dead with that number growing and many thousands of my people who have had their homes and lives destroyed by this terrible tragedy.
I continue to follow the updates streaming directly from Japan, and the news is dire. There are several nuclear reactors that have been impacted by the earthquake and Tsunami, and are forcing many thousands more people to evacuate their homes.
The reason I’m sharing this with you is because I know some of you want to help but may not know what the correct channels are. My recommendation is to donate to the Red Cross, which is moving in as quickly as possible to help provide relief for those who are suffering. I have provided a link below for the Red Cross so that you may make a donation, if you choose. It’s tax deductible, and you will be directly helping the Japanese people.
https://american.redcross.org/site/Donation2?idb=0&5052.donation=form1&df_id=5052 Japanese people in the disaster area have a lack of water and food; it is now snowing in many places where they have no shelter or warm clothes. They are short on gasoline to deliver food and water to impacted areas. There are rolling blackouts throughout Japan including Tokyo due to a failing power infrastructure.
I am proud to be Japanese because of the way the Japanese people are handling this disaster. They are patient and diligent; there is no looting or violence. Many nuclear reactor workers who have lost family members still work around the clock without sleep to get the reactor situation under control and prevent further death. I assure you that your donation to the Red Cross means a lot to Japan and it means a lot to me.
