Browns signed Willie McGinest. The news came out literally as I was typing out that last entry. Frickin' awesome. He's good for about six sacks. Fills a much needed hole in the QB pressure department. Can I also say that Phil Savage's move here is made more brilliant by the pickup of stud nose tackle Ted Washington previously? Washington is big and a run-stopper. He'll eat up several blockers at the line freeing Andre Davis to pick up the run and McGinest to attack the pocket. I saw Mike Ditka say once that you earn the right to rush the quarterback. That's true. If you can't stop the run, you can't even begin to think about taking a chance and breaking past the line of scrimmage. Of course the 3-4 scheme isn't going to be used to its maximum potential until we have multiple threats from the front seven to rush the quarterback. But perhaps guys like Orpheus Roye will have more opportunities with a significant amount of attention going towards these new guys.
Now... the draft '06. Who will the Browns get? The conventional wisdom was that they'd get Haloti Ngata, a nose tackle from Oregon. But as I just mentioned, Ted Washington is currently filling that spot. Now, Washington is a bit of a grey-beard and isn't aging backwards so picking up a young guy in that position is still a good decision for the future of the franchise. But he may not even be available at the #12 pick. If Michael Huff (S - Texas) slips I'm sure they'd take him in a heartbeat. Lendale White could be available, but Droughns is just 27, frickin' awesome and our best player, and basically is the same type of running back. We have plenty of young talent on offense and I'd much rather see some young blood added to the defensive end of things. I know the offense was the weak point last year, but it'll improve. These guys will grow and get better.
Shrewd management in Cleveland these days. Still adjusting... not sure what to think. Anyway, Shapiro's been excellent for the Tribe on a shoestring budget and Ferry has already proven himself in his first season with the Cavs. Hughes and Marshall were nice acquisitions, but the mid-season addition of Flip Murray from a management perspective is what sticks out to me. More on the shrewdness of that move in another post.
Finals are over and winter quarter is in the books. 10 more weeks of class, one more round of finals and then I have to officially grow up. Weird.
Ok, I've had a lot to say today. I'll save some for next time. You kids stay classy.
