I have been trying to get in shape. Shocking, I know. Wait for the revelation. I was actually on a great path when I returned from China. I had dropped 15 lbs (thanks jet lag). So I was around 200 lbs. I decided to try a running program I had seen in my Men's Health Magazine. It was a gradual program that would build me up to running 10 miles. I started by running 3 miles at a time. I got all the way to 5 miles at a 10 minute click. Then my usual luck showed its ugly side. I was running a light run and felt a tightness in a hammy. No worries. Walked the rest of the way home (about a mile). I then made things worse when I had to dodge a car that treated a stop sign like a yield (or go) sign. So I gave it a few days off. When I went back, running slowly and then it happened. Some little person came up and stabbed my hammy... or that's what it felt like. I was about 7 blocks away from home, that was a painful walk. This knocked me down for a while. During my recovery time, I didn't watch what I ate and I began gaining weight again. I was so close to seeing my abs. Add in hip problems, flexibility giveth and taketh, and it took some time for me to get back.
I finally can run again. I recently ran 2 miles and it was all good. So I began my journey again. I have carefully planned it out. I am doing my p90x weight workouts 4-5 days a week, running 2-3 days, and p90x yoga 1 day. Listening carefully to my body. But my real change is calorie counting. I am using livestrong.com to keep track of my intake. This is difficult because I want to eat, but I need to manage myself. So to keep me motivated, besides seeing my abs, I have decided that every 3 weeks I get a cheat meal. A friend of mine told a story of a study done on children. They could receive an M&M immediately or if they could wait for a period of time, they would get 2 pieces. This was to demonstrate realizing that if you show patience and concentrate on a goal, you will be rewarded. So the proverbial 2nd M&M is my cheat meal. The journey is not easy, but my attitude has been good. The only real question is what to eat? (Think eating competition worthy type of meal, Man vs Food) Let the fun begin.
