The mailroom called me this morning, wanting to know if I could come in a half hour early. Supposedly it was to show me how to do something before all the full-timers left, but they didn't end up showing me anything. But I ended up staying at the mail center all day, handing out packages to students because they had to pick them up by 5:00. I was originally supposed to go to the Terrace Mailroom from 1-4, but there was already a girl there, and there was no need to have two of us there. So I stayed at the mailcenter, which I was fine with. I left a lil before 4:00, went home to relax for 20 minutes, then went out to catch the TCAT to the mall.
While I was in the commons I deposited my checks and mailed a book I sold on half.com. Then I transferred and went over to the mall/movie theater. I ended up being about a half hour early all together, but after I fixed myself up a bit in the bathroom I was 15 minutes early. But that was just right, so I got to the theater at 5:45. I met Teresa, who was my interviewer, and she was really really nice. Right away I could tell she was laid back and friendly. And she's young too, probably not out of her 20's yet. We went upstairs, past the projectors and went into the office. It was more like a friendly chat than an interview. I was getting good vibes from her, and she was smiling a lot so I felt free to smile a lot and laugh and make some jokes.
Here's the scoop. From what she was saying the job sounds really fun. Everyone gets along and has fun and the job is really easy. You start on concession, then move up to ushering, then selling tickets. There's a uniform: black shoes/pants, white t-shirt under a maroon shirt they give you, no nailpolish or weird piercings, no visible tattoos, hair up while at concession. It's basic corporation rules, but I'm fine with that. The hours are really flexible, because they have lots of people working there. So if I want a lot of hours, I can have a lot, and when I have class they'll bump it down. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter get time and a half and of course...free movies!! Me and a guest can always see movies for free provided I work at least 1-2 shifts a week. The downside is that you start at $5.35 an hour. Not great, but there are other bonuses. Teresea says the bosses are always giving gift certificates to places like Best Buy or Borders or pizza places. And if you sell a lot of combos or something, you can get raises. And the more jobs you train for, the more money you get. And if you close you get more.
I wish the job paid more, but the way I look at it is that this job is in addition to my mailroom job. So $5.35 isn't great by itself, but together with $7 an hour, it's not too shabby. So it'll make my finances a little less tight, and I'll save money on movie tickets! And I'll just also get to see movies I probably wouldn't see anyway. So I think that I essentially have the job. The only thing that is preventing it from being "official" is the fact that Teresa has to check my references. But provided that she can get in touch with someone on my application, and they say something nice about me, I'm 99.9% sure I have the job. (eeeeeee!) So you can be damn sure I'm gonna take advantage of free movies while RotK is still there! I'm so excited!! I always wanted to work in a movie theater! And now I'm going to! Weeeeeeee! I think this job is going to be really, really fun, and really, really perfect for me. *beams*
After my interview I bought black shoe polish to make my brown boots black. I showed Teresa my boots and asked if they were okay, and she said that she'd say they were, but the big bosses wouldn't. So I asked if I just got some shoe polish, would that work and she said that would be good. So now I'm just wondering if they really look black. They look darker than before, but I don't know if they really pass as black. I hope so. I'd rather not buy new shoes, seeing that I just mangled these. Not that they were brand new or anything. They're old and falling apart, but they'd be good for the job provided I can use them. Anyway, after that I went to the Dollar store and bought some cheap Christmas ornaments. I decided that I didn't want to spend $20 or $30 on a tiny tree, so instead of a Christmas Tree I have a Christmas Bike!
I already had my lights on it that Kat gave me. So I added silver tinsel, and these fae pinecone/piney/silvery things, and really cheap ornaments that are kinda pretty, and a very pretty glass angel and two candy canes and my Christmas duck is sitting on the basket. And I arranged my Hanukah presents from my parents under the bike...heehee! It's borderline tacky, but Kat says it looks cute. I agree with her. I love it! It's a poor girl's tree. And I finally found a use for the bike! I have to take pictures, or get someone to take pictures at some point so everyone can see it in all its glory. Tomorrow or Sunday I'm going to Kat's to decorate her actual tree, and I think we're gonna go grocery shopping after. So that should be nice. But more importantly, I get to sleep in late tomorrow. Mmmmmmmm...sleep.
