sword of doom was pretty cool. quite different from most movies today (plus the black n' white n' all). the "hero" is droll and practically emotionless (and a bastard hardcore killer). there's some good drama leading up to a startling revelation, which for some reason doesn't factor into the ending at all, replaced instead by a bat-shit-crazy massive murder spree.

it makes me wonder... if the shinsengumi were so awesome, why do they always get slaughtered in manga and movies?
