history: Here is the long, lovely history of ME2. Here is Kasumi’s history in particular.

To note, she comes from a male Shepard universe.

personality:

Despite her very cloak and dagger lifestyle as a master thief, of all the people on the Normandy crew, both in the first and second game, Kasumi is probably second in her ability to read people only to the resident ship psychologist, Kelly Chambers. She has a comment on nearly every bit of crew behavior, and most all of them from a compassionate point of view. Part of this she gains from her ability and drive to keep her fingers firmly on the gossip pulse, but the rest she gains simply from her own empathy and love of chatting with others. From the Justicar that had just murdered her own daughter, to the two bicker/flirting engineers, to the merc lost about what to do with himself now that he’d had his revenge, Kasumi has no fear of chatting with or getting the downlow on any one she decides is of interest. Which, in a small space such as the Normandy, tends to be everyone. Kasumi is used to a far more active lifestyle, after all, and inactivity is met with her filling the hours the best she can with whatever projects are available to her.

Which isn’t to say she sees those around her as mere distractions. Kasumi doesn’t do anything dispassionately. She genuinely cares, to a varying degree and, admittedly, in her own unique way, about all those around her and any bit of work she engages herself in. She’s rescued children from slavers for no other reason than she refused to see them suffer, and in the same way she takes an interest in the lives of those around her. This passion extends very deeply into her work as well, of course. She criticizes some business-people for not ‘knowing why they do what they do,’ seeing anyone who views money as the end goal of their work as soulless. A job should be done as she does them, for the love of the work.

In her case, of course, this love is related more to the thrill of the challenge that comes with being a thief than anything else. She tends to take a bit of an overly sentimental, romantic view of her work (along with the rest of her life, to be honest, easily becoming sentimental about objects and people), as seen by her initial tendency to leave a rose as a calling card for all her thefts or the fact she kept the painting she was hired to steal on the night she first met her partner. This habit of sentimentality, it should be noted, was only tempered at the insistence of something she carried a far deeper emotional attachment to than her flares for drama, her former partner in crime/lover.

On top of her perception and passion, Kasumi has a bit of a wicked sense of humor. She very casually slips in a mention of submitting Shepard into an issue of ‘Badasses Weekly’ during a serious rundown of their mission plan, and has fun toying with flirting with the Commander despite never very seriously moving in. She thrives when around those that can share her love and amusement with life and the galaxy, but at the same time will attempt to understand those that take a different path. Or if she fails to understand, will at least accept there must be something special about them for them to be so different she can not fully comprehend them. It should be noted, however, that while she may express professional appreciation for more ‘evil’ individuals, her love of acceptance and attempted understanding doesn’t tend to extent to them. If you’re a slaver or a murderer of the innocent, she would much rather see your mind splattered on the sidewalk than try to understand how it functions.

abilities/powers: Kasumi is a master thief. She can hack, crack, and pick just about anything from computer encryptions to vault doors. She’s also a very skilled dex based fighter, able to parkour her way on to (essentially) a helicopter that’s in air, get its defenses down, and then cheerfully back-flip back off on to the ground. She is exceedingly talented in stealth, even without her electronic enhancements, relying on the element of surprise and keeping what she looks like a secret for much of her work. With the right materials available to her, Kasumi is also familiar with how to produce and use grenades, along with how to use pistols and other firearms.

[There’s a soft click, click of someone walking across a hard floor down an echoing hall in the background as a contemplative voice comes over the network.]

When I was young, I would spend nights dreaming of far off worlds. Of adventure. My grandmother would neither encourage or scold such childish dreams. Wise woman she was. Instead, she told me a story.

You see, once, long ago, in the nation of Japan there were two frogs which lived along the same river, one on the banks of the city of Osaka, and one in Kyoto. One day both decided they wished to see the world and set forth down the road, one towards Kyoto and one towards Osaka. Between these two cities stood a great mountain, which each struggled for many days to climb, only to be delightfully surprised upon reaching the top by discovering the other. In no great hurry to move on after their climb, the two reclined upon the cool grass and fell into conversation, eventually discovering they had both set out to see one another’s city of birth.

“It is a pity,” remarked one, “we are so small. Otherwise we could simply see the great cities from here and know if it were worth the journey!”

“Ah,” said the other, “we need but hold on to one another for balance and stand on our long legs. Then we shall know the truth of the world!”

And so the new friends each faced the city they wished to see and, holding fast to one another, did stand. Alas, frogs are the most foolish of creatures, and each forgot that by standing, though their noses may point forward, their eyes will only look back. Thus from their stance each frog could see only the city he had come from.

“Dear me!” They cried. “Your city is exactly like mine! I should not have bothered to make the journey had I know.”

And so, greatly disappointed, the two friends bid each other farewell and journeyed back to their homes, where they lived out the rest of their lives in happiness and peace, each never knowing the truth of what they had seen.

[She gives a small, thoughtful, ‘hm,’ followed by a quiet laugh.]

I’m not sure I’ve ever figure out what she was trying to say by that. Too late now. Funny that arriving here should make me think of it. Maybe my ‘death’ has made me overly sentimental.

third person sample:

Boredom was going to be a problem. Kasumi sighed quietly to herself as she wandered down the abandoned main street. There were lights here, certainly, but they did not signal life. There was no energy to them, no hum of people basing their lives and passions around the spots which the lights illuminated. Or in the shadows where the notably did not. The world was quiet, the dull hum of whatever electronics that remained on there out of habit rather than necessity. There was no one to hide from here, no stealth required even as her footsteps fell silently, an unbreakable habit of her own. To somewhat fill the void absent of life or footfall, she hummed softly to herself, the words drifting across her mind to better ignore the silence around her.

Hey ho, anybody home? Meat nor drink nor money have I none. Still, I will be ha-a-appy...

The notes faded out into nothing as one building finally caught her eye. There were no locks on the doors- well, none that she counted as locks, anyway, more like an advanced doorknob than a ‘lock’- so she let herself in. And had to pause a moment in the doorway, a breath catching in her throat at the sight. Used Books, Bought And Sold.. Whoever thought such a dull name could contain something so very fantastic.

“Perfection.”
