How Did We Get Here?

Apr 09, 2011 03:15

sdfasAAre you confused by the potential government shutdown that we may see next week?  From what I have been seeing on Facebook and the internet people are largely unaware of whats going on and how did we get to this point.

It all started with the Financial Crisis in 2007-2008.  Hopefully most of you are familiar with the crisis that was caused when banks made risky investments and then expected the US government to bail them out without nasty forced reforms attached.  They bullied the American people into believing that they were so big that their collapse would bring ruin and doom to the nation.  They also bought the government.  In the last election banks were the largest donors to political candidates.

The argument at the time was that we can force them to accept reforms after we give them the bailout money.  Those reforms have ceased to come to fruition and the banks used the money to pay shareholders and the salaries of CEOs.

Meanwhile this bailout came at a time after we had been paying for to expensive wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Wars of empire that have proven to be a waste of blood and treasure, except to the elites of the military industrial complex and the newly empowered Defense Contractors.

So we can all agree that the coffers are rather low right now.  So what is the first thing that the republicans do when they took over the house?  They exasperate the situation by ensure large tax cuts for richest Americans and corporations and cut revenue.  The White House and the rest of the Democrats went along with this with hardly any fight.

So where will the money come from?  Now the government seeks to cut the budget severely, especially in those areas that benefit greater portions of society like Medicaid and Energy assistance.  No cuts are proposed to defense, which is over 2/3s of the budget.

This is happening in countries like Greece and England.  The top 2% break the economy and the rest of society is expected to suffer the budget cuts, loss of pensions, job security.  All because the corporations broke everything trying to make an extra nickel, and because in America they have been allowed to openly buy our politicians.

Meanwhile the corporations have been pouring money into any organization like the tea party what will shift the blame for a our troubles to the government.  The corporations and religious leaders seek a weakened US government in order to control those services that the government once controlled, like roads or services to the poor.

Everything is backwards.

I am not sure what is going to happen, but our future looks grim.
