I just finished up the latest season of Survivor and something that Russell Hantz said really chapped my ass. I begrudgingly admit that Russell is a good player, manipulates people well, good at challenges, understands the game, but he does two things as part of his strategy that really hurt his game and make me not like him as a player.
The first is that he often unnecessarily pisses off or is mean too other players, often ones that will vote for the finally winner. This is hardly a unique flaw in Survivor history, but he is probably one of the best examples of why you can win the game if you do that. You necessarily make other players angry by breaking alliances and outwitting them in order to make it to the end. There is no reason to add to this resentment.
He also makes a habit of making life miserable for his own tribe by burning their clothes, dumping out their water, and hiding tools. During the tribe phase of the game you NEED your tribe to be as strong as possible. Dehydrating and demoralizing your teammates also harms you, plus its a pretty dick move.
During the finale Russell was complaining that "inferior" players had beat him out in Samoa and Heroes vs. Villains. His solution to this was to give a portion of the final vote to the audience at home. Fortunately the host pointed out just how much that would change the game. Hearing this really made me angry.
If the audience were to decide the winner of Survivor, the game would be reduced to little more than American Idol. Although C made sit down and watch, I can hardly stand the show. Even when there are contestants that I like, they are quickly voted off by a fickle and stupid army of teenage girls.
Survivor is one of the few shows on TV that I still enjoy and I would hate to see seasons of outwitting, outdoorsmanship, and scheming being thrown out for what would amount to little more than popularity contest for jackasses.
