30 in 30 2010

If emosnail  hadn't posted about 30in30 today I would have completely forgot about it.
Those of you are that new to this or have just
completely forgot about last year,
30in30 is a yearly ritual were bloggers try to write 30 articles
in 30 days as a form of self-flagellation.

For those of you who may just be joining us I am EPIK Justino and I am an English teacher at a Korean University.  I like to write about international affairs, books, life in Korea, and teaching.

My posting has been sporadic lately and I am looking foward to getting some material out.  Lately North Korea has been in the news and I have been reading up.  Because it is timely I will try to pos 30 posts about North Korea in 30 days.

The reason North Korea has been in the news lately is that a DPRK submarine sank a South Korean Corvette in the disputed maritime border region near Incheon. This attack has ratchetted up tensions here higher than they have been since the Korean War.

Many Koreans are suspicious of the results of the investigation into the sinking.  Most Koreans that I have talk to believe that the whole incident has been engineered by the conservative government to manipulation today's election for Provincial and Mayoral leaders.  I have been shocked at how many Koreans that I have talked to dismiss the whole incident at GNP and US war-mongering.

The natural position to view authority from is suspicion and probably contempt.  South Koreans have suffered under a military dictatorship for about 50 years.  By all accounts this dictatorship was just as nasty at the one in the north.  Many Koreans blame the US (rightly) for proping up this repressive government.

Although I personally believe that the hiearchical structure of Korean society did more to sustain the Military government of South Korea than the US could ever hope to do, the government that was installed by America after WWII was just as bad the Kim Sung Il's murder machine to the north.

So what we are left with is something very similar too "9/11 was an inside job" urban legend that seems to be quickly gaining ground.  Over the next few days I will illustrate some the misconseptions floating around about the sinking of the Cheonan and I will seek to review the current evedence.
