To Distraction
by Hereswith
“Size matters,” he says, twirling a ribbon into a bow. “A hat too large or too small is a badly made hat, and a badly made hat won’t do.”
“No,” Alice agrees. She has been watching him work, the play of his hands and the dance of his fingers, the sweet little frown of concentration on his face. Feeling light-headed and decidedly reckless, she adds, “Hatter?”
“Mmm,” he replies.
“I’m not wearing stockings.”
He turns to her and she kisses him, tasting him like a fine, rare tea, such a delicious blend of eagerness and surprise. When she leans away, he remains in place, his eyes closed and his lips parted, forming a slight ‘o’, as though he waits for her to kiss him again. She sways on her feet, back and forth, yes or no, but no, she sits on the side table instead, the one less cluttered with hats and tools, hitches her dress up and reaches for his hand, guiding it to her leg.
His odd eyes startle wide and luminous, changing colour. “Silk,” he mutters distractedly. “Satin. Velvet.” He breathes in with a shudder. “Proportional and perfectly Alice-shaped, from toes to knee to thigh.”
His touch tickles, but then it doesn’t, and, “Oh my,” she sighs, falling back on feathers and trim, her right fist clenching the fabric she holds.
It is really quite wicked, her position and his, the way he pushes her dress higher and she lets him, and the room so full of sunlight, the door unlocked and the windows open to allow any sort of sounds to slip out and drift in. They could be caught. They could be heard. But there’s Hatter, dear Hatter, using his hands and his fingers like she wanted, making her wriggle and squirm and gasp. She bites her lip, hard, to keep quiet, and lets go.
