Today's haul at the market, in brief: corn and things to go with corn. Okay, and some eggplant too. Last night I was looking up two of my favorite summer stews (including corn and mushroom ragout with sage and roasted garlic, which is on my list of all-time favorite meals) and I came across a summer eggplant stew I'd completely forgotten about. So I planned for that as well.
The actual tally: corn, eggplant, cippolini onions, candy onions, red pepper, yellow pepper, apple pepper, zucchini, yellow squash, pattypan squash, green beans, mushrooms, garlic, plum tomatoes, brandywine tomatoes, yellowbelly tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, and sage. Oh, and lots of basil, because there's no such thing as too much pesto.
Also, I got jam. Lots and lots of jam. 12 large jars of jam, actually, because when the cranky little jam-making man saw that I was getting serious about the jam, he softened towards me a bit and said he'd give me a discount if I bought a whole case, as long as I got a jar of the new hedgerow jam, because he's trying to get people to try it. I'd only been intending to get 8 jars, but what the hell. So the final jam results:
apricot (x4)
red raspberry
strawberry
strawberry-rhubarb
berry basket (red & black raspberries, blackberries)
english country (strawberries, black currants)
amore (apricot, orange)
hedgerow (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries)
millenium (apricots, plums, white wine, honey)
The last three are ones I haven't had before, and I'm really looking forward to trying them.
It feels odd to be buying all this jam right now - I don't eat much jam in the summer; but I do eat it all winter long, and cook with it, and glaze things with it. So when I thought about how much jam I usually buy between September and April, I realized I'll definitely go through the whole case. It's just funny to get so much all at once rather than a jar at a time.
