midsummer vegetables, fun with code, and personal insight

Jul 26, 2003 08:03

This week: eggplant! and red peppers!, to roast and put in pita with cucumber and yogurt sauce; mushrooms and tomatoes, to go with leftover polenta; tomatillos, sweet onions, fresh garlic, jalapeños and anaheim chiles for green salsa; new red potatoes for curried potato salad; carrots and basil on principle; and cheese curds, for tzikeh, who regards vegetables with suspicion if not outright loathing. Next week there should be organic corn (conventional was all over the market this week), which means corn-mushroom ragout and corn-squash soup with anaheim and cilantro and corn chowder and quinoa salad with corn and . . . oh, I'm *very* happy.

In other news, last night I got serious about starting to code an all-CSS LJ style. It's fun - a puzzle, definitely, but I like puzzles. I kept getting distracted by colors, so I converted the test page to shades of gray - makes it easier for me to focus. I'm stealing ideas from lots of different layouts, notably elynross's and melymbrosia's, and also using this as a chance to practice some block-element stuff I haven't had a chance to play with before.

If my dissertation were like this - all experimentation and learning new things - rather than the prolonged elaboration of now-stale insights, I think I would be making much faster progess; and of course my slowness only exacerbates the problem. ::: sigh :::

But today is not a day for being annoyed. I've got an apartment to clean: renenet and Eunice are arriving this afternoon!
