I was super-excited to go to this panel and take lots of notes! And then as it turned out I didn't get to take any notes at all, because

Thanks for posting this - it's a really intersting topic, and I wish I could have been there and listented to it all and participated. But this is - very good - second best! A definately agree that when you start out it can be really hard to find a good beta, unless you have the confidence to walk right up to somebody and ask very directly. And obviously you'd want beta from somebody who's style you like/admire/aspire to, because there is a huge variation between tastes, technique and styles across the vidding fandom. Non of it necessarily bad, just different. Personally, I also differentiate between beta (private machete concrit during creation of a vid) and feedback (after the dead, often public, concrit or not depending on what the vidder asks for). Two very different things, with different purpose, asking for a different response. If no feedback is asked for, it should not be given. A public space, particularly the internet, is rarely the right place to critique

I suppose this is true for some people, but personally I want beta comments from somebody who is smart and articulate and understands what I am trying to do regardless of her vidding style or whether she vids at all. My primary beta does not identify as a vidder and was giving me amazing beta comments long before she made her first vid. Many of the best beta comments I've gotten have been from people who don't vid, or vid infrequently, or no longer vid. YMMV, of course.

That was the consensus in the VVC discussion as well. I would add that both can be distinguished from discussion that focuses on the vid itself and not the edification of the vidder.
A public space, particularly the internet, is rarely the right place to critique.I take your point, and certainly there are some criticisms that I would choose to deliver in a private email

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to criticize or disagree with what you said, it's just an interesting topic, and I was musing publicly over my morning coffee to make up for not being there....;)
