1) Ward Shelley's
map of science fiction. It will probably surprise no one that I am particularly intrigued by the prehistory of SF, beginning with Fear and Wonder and including the Gothic Novel (Anne Radcliffe! Matthew Lewis! Charlotte and Emily Bronte! Wilkie Collins!). I am less impressed with the male-centric account of recent decades, but I have to say I do like Shelley's attitude: "What I wanted was to provide a larger structure, within which people could have a death fight about what belongs in the canon. And that's what I saw happening, immediately. The piece was posted on one blog, and everyone was asking, not very politely, 'How could you leave this one thing off?'" (

Nist.tv and
Feminist Frequency have joined forces to put together
Feminism in Focus: Interviews with Feminist Video Creators. And hey,
I got to be one of the interviewees! I'm in some great company: Anita Sarkeesian (
Feminist Frequency), Elisa Kreisinger (
Pop Culture Pirate), and several other feminist video creators whose work I don't yet know but am looking forward to finding out about.
I should say: I assumed that the audience for the video wouldn't know much about fandom, let alone vidding, so if you watch, don't expect any deep insights; it's really Vidding 101 For Non-Fans, kinda like the OTW documentary that
laurashapiro edited a few years ago. I'm not saying there's no amusement value -- you get to hear me being a dork, which my students assure me can be pretty entertaining. Just, you know, calibrate your expectations appropriately.
Putting together the interview was interesting, but wow, it made me appreciate vidding all over again; vidding is... not easier, exactly, but a lot more fun. Ah well. I think I've finally internalized some of the After Effects keyboard shortcuts, so, um, yay?
