report from little thunderdome on the prairie

Having truepenny here is delightful; she's been writing lots of words during the day (the cats are pleased that someone is staying home with them), and in the evenings we've been hanging out watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and discussing it. (I have really missed talking TV with her; there's really no substitute for sitting around tossing ideas back and forth with one of the smartest and most insightful people I know.) Plus I've been able to cook with abandon, since there's someone else here to help me eat: spinach lasagne, split pea soup, squash-leek curry, saag paneer, chili and cornbread, sunchoke stew under a cobbler topping, chicken pesto pizza, sourdough bread, oatmeal with brown sugar and maple syrup. We've watched vids and talked about Due South and listened to Nada Surf and gone out for ice cream and laughed about LOLcats and finished each other's sentences. This weekend we resurrected Sunday Night Pizza & Media: invited over a couple of my local friends for dinner and an episode of Firefly, accompanied by a bottle of wine and a lot of silliness and good cheer.

And did I mention she's getting work done? I'm very pleased.

Meanwhile, I've finally tricked the home computer into letting me put it in RAID mode, and I'm formatting the new 500GB vidding drive RIGHT NOW, which means I can start ripping DVDs to it later this week. (Whee!) Another good thing about having truepenny here: she intuitively understands my Tolkien-based naming system for the various computer components, and helped me come up with "Fëanor" as the name for the vidding drive. Geeks for friends: accept no substitutes.
