here's luck cooks at home

About two months ago I arranged to buy a quarter-beef from a local farmer who raises grass-fed cows. Yesterday I finally got a chance to drive out to the country butcher that did the processing, and picked up... about 160 pounds of beef. And I got to meet the butcher, who was very nice.

Anyhow, I got all that meat home, and I just had to eat some of it. So I got out two rib steaks to thaw, and this morning I called a friend to invite her over for dinner.

Dinner consisted of:
  • crusty bread, plus olives, which we nibbled while I cooked the steaks
  • rib steaks with red wine pan sauce
  • baked potatoes
  • roasted green beans with red onion and walnuts
  • roasted crimini mushrooms with pine nuts
  • ...all accompanied by a nice bottle of Malbec
  • plus homemade fudge for dessert
(Recipes available on request.)

It was a nice leisurely meal, both in the cooking and the consuming; I started prep work around 4:45, we ate at 6:30, and then after dinner we settled in my living room until well past 10pm, eating fudge and chatting and playing with the cats and doing various things with yarn (I knit, she crochets) and talking about Slings & Arrows and Battlestar Galactica.

We have something similar planned for New Year's Eve with a few additional friends, which is exactly the sort of small warm cozy gathering I like to be part of as we ring the old year out and the new one in.

And now I'm going to go finish the dishes, brush my teeth, get into my pajamas, and settle into bed to scan some seed catalogues before I go to sleep.

food, year's end, good things
