vidding in the Buffyverse and elsewhere

A week or so ago, renenet posted some questions from a Buffyverse fan starting work on an academic project about vids. I'm e-mailing my responses directly to her, of course, but thought I'd also post a modified version here and send her the link in case discussion ensues. Thank you. This is fascinating stuff.

Now I am all excited about Vividcon again. :-) Someday I think I'd like to write a small ramble about my fannish maturing process and my appreciation of vids as a fannish art form. Fanfiction gripped me from day one; it took me a while to understand vids well enough to enjoy them (instead of watching them with this vague feeling of "oh no! I'm not cool! I'm not getting it!" which I realize had far more to do with me than with the vids in question), and it was really only last year when I came to VVC for the first time that I realized I've become a bona fide vid fan...

I know what you mean about appreciating vids as a fannish art form -- it took me a long time to get there too. For a long time I just didn't see the POINT of vids for fandoms I wasn't in, and even within BtVS I thought about them in solely thematic or musical terms. It's one of the big ironies of vidding, for me, that I'm not a particularly visual person; learning to deal with and think about vids as a specifically VISUAL art form was time-consuming and not intuitive. Which is just... I mean, what was I thinking? And yet, here I am learning stuff. Thank goodness I like learning stuff. *g*
