winter market: squash and potatoes

Nov 20, 2004 14:13

Lots of potatoes this week - more of the cranberry potatoes, and then a couple of pounds of mixed potatoes (purple viking, german butterball, peruvian blue, red norland, rose fingerling) for roasting, though in fact I will probably pick out the purple vikings and mash them instead.

Also lots of squash: a distinctly peculiar-looking butternut squash, and three lovely little blue ballet (baby hubbards), very round and blue, all three for two dollars.

Also picked up parsnips (for soup), pork sausage (for breakfasts), cranberries (for muffins, cranberry-applesauce, and gingered cranberry sauce) and garlic (for everything).

Now I just have to find that parsnip soup recipe. Hmm.

I did regular grocery shopping afterwards, and found some really beautiful greek olives, which means I will definitely be making olive-rosemary bread tomorrow. Yum. Also: Izze makes a really good grapefruit soda that is now my third-favorite beverage in the world (at least until the weather turns cold again and I start wanting chai all the time).
