I keep sending out copies of my PhD thesis and the comments I get back show, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that nobody read them. My native brilliance is hidden behind the cloud of unknowing, obviously. Well, I can tell you're brilliant from reading your LJ. Surely not all employers can be completely unintelligent and unable to see what I see?
The thing that I have to keep reminding myself is that the job market is only partly about brilliance; a lot of it is about what a particular department needs in terms of focus, secondary specialties, even personality. Those are the sorts of things that don't make it into job postings, so we're all just guessing at what a particular committee might want or need to hear in order for the application to stand out. It's frustrating, but also kind of gets me off the hook emotionally; if I don't get an interview, it's not because I suck; it's just because they needed a different kind of candidate.
The problem for me is reading the listings and thinking, "If they're serious about these preferences--not, like, disposable wish-list items--none of these reasonably attractive places wants me." Ah well. Best of luck to you. Onward....
