the good, the bad, the annoying, and the nifty...

...though not in that order.

the bad
I didn't get the community college job I applied for. There's now a significant chance that I won't be gainfully employed by the university next year and will have to beg The Bookstore to take me back. Dammit.

the annoying
I've been called for jury duty the week of spring break. Not tragic, but does mean that my plans to get to D.C., Denver, or Austin have pretty much been dealt a fatal blow. If I don't actually have to show up for duty, I can still get away, of course; I'll just be limited to car travel or last-minute airfare specials.

the nifty
Jennifer Crusie did a not-really-a-reading at a local bookstore this evening. She talked about Bet Me and answered questions rather than reading from the book, which I appreciated, and was (not surprisingly) insightful, articulate, and funny about the writing process, the publishing industry, revision, comedy, and the importance of arrogance for women. I didn't bring books for her to sign, because the whole signed-copy thing doesn't usually interest me, so I hung around at the end of the line and thus ended up getting to chat with her for a while. We fangirled about BtVS and traded stories about teaching first-year comp and made approving noises about each other's dissertations. She was entirely delightful.

the good
I saved this one for last because I'm so happy about it. Remember that teaching fellowship I posted about a while back? Apparently I got it. Nothing official yet, but one of the profs on my diss committee told me today that he ended up on one of the three subcommittees that ranks the nominees, and I was one of the top two nominees on both of the two lists that he's seen. So it looks like I got it. Which is pretty fucking cool.

In other news, there will be a NotCapade report forthcoming at some point, hopefully before I forget everything of interest, but I'm facing down another week of Solving Other People's Problems, so I'll probably get to it later rather than sooner. In the meantime, sisabet captures the mood of the weekend pretty well.
