a few months back, i was baking scones and muffins and biscuits every week, until i realized that gorging on baked goods all the time might not be the most healthy thing. but it sure is nice to have a freezer full of homemade breakfast things to take to school when i'm in a hurry, or to serve with brunch on the weekends, so now i've decided to test ( Read more... )

well, at this point, most if not all programs have already notified, although some wait to send out the rejections in case they need to go to their waitlist. i got into irvine off their unofficial waitlist in april of last year -- but generally, if you haven't heard yet, it's not very likely :/.

which faculty member at chicago did you speak with? was it macaloon, or someone else in the anthro dept? MAPSS definitely dangles the possibility of getting into the PhD as a lure, and most MAPSS students won't actually get into the program they originally applied for. of my MAPSS anthro friends, though, a couple have gotten in (one reapplied the fall we started the program, and was accepted immediately, but had been encouraged by the dept, and the others applied the following year, but one didn't get much funding). two of my other friends and i, however, reapplied and weren't accepted, although two of us got into other strong programs (UT Austin and UC Irvine), and the third only applied to four programs.

personally, i think the program is disingenous in certain ways, because even if you get into the phd program down the line, you've effectively completed your first year on your own dime, earning them money when they would otherwise have to fund you. on the other hand, the core program is excellent, the preceptors are great, and you get the opportunity to get to know some amazing faculty. and even if you don't get into chicago for the phd, you will be more competitive at other programs, because you'll have a stronger background in anthro and be more focused. i think many students who complete MAPSS realize they don't actually want to commit to 6+ years of graduate school, and get out with an MA and go find themselves an interesting job. so from that perspective, it's an excellent way to complete a year of graduate school, especially if you don't have many other options (which was my situation).

what are you interested in doing in anthro?
