On the edge of a knife (RP, closed to Lelouch)

Feb 24, 2008 20:18

Light glared at Lelouch as his friend dragged him into his dorm room. This was the first time he'd seen the place and he was relieved it was a single - no roommate to interrupt meant that they could discuss things as privately as possible. Assuming, of course, there were no hidden cameras ( Read more... )

"I was surprised you didn't do anything about him yourself." Lelouch sat down on his bed, and patted the space next to him, gesturing Light to sit.

"So...back to our conversation before it was interrupted. Just what is a 'shinigami?'" He looked at the strange creature as he referred to it, and got a very creepy smile in response.

He raised an eyebrow at Lelouch's remark. That was the easiest way to get rid of their snoop without seeming too rude. Light sat down next to him and felt Ryuk hover nearby.

"A god of death. They stay in their world most of the time, taking care of humans whose time has come to die. Ryuk is here because the notebook belongs to him and he can't take it back until the person who first found it is dead." It was all true. But that didn't make it the complete truth.

"So...why do you write in that notebook, if it isn't yours?"

Lelouch was hoping to trap Light--either he wouldn't answer at all, or would lie. Quite frankly, the prince would be very surprised to get a straight answer.

Of course, he could always find out using the Geass, but then Light would be useless to him. That...and Ryuk was staring straight at them. If Ryuk wasn't human, that meant there was a very good chance that the Geass wouldn't work on him, so somehow he'd either have to get Ryuk to leave (likely by having someone take the notebook without Light realizing), or he'd simply have to wait until Ryuk was not with Light.

Both would take much more effort, and Lelouch had no reason to put that much work into finding out more.

He'd never said the notebook wasn't his. But the question was worded strangely - if he made a casual excuse, his protectiveness towards it would seem odd; if he didn't answer at all, it would be suspicious. "It's not from this world, so I'm curious to see if there's anything special about it. Ryuk won't tell anyone one way or the other."

Curiosity was the inital reason he used it, that much was true. But Ryuk had told the police some details, and Light knew almost everything there was to know about the notebook's qualities. The shinigami remained silent, choosing to stay close to Light until asked otherwise.

"So...have you found anything out?" Lelouch was now very curious...perhaps he could ask Ryuk a few questions, too.

There were probably some very interesting things about a death god's notebook that he wasn't being told.

There was a lot he wasn't telling. And hopefully it would stay that way. But as long as he could keep being half-honest, he'd talk.

"At one point, there were two Kiras. Now that I have this, there appears to be only one. So there is a connection between being the rightful owner and killing people."

Ryuk nodded agreement with Light's words.

Lelouch immediately came to a conclusion, but needed to test it first. He wasn't about to let Light figure out he knew, though.

"When you found that notebook, did the killings associated with Kira stop?"

Wrong question. I'll have to try again...but what do I need to ask?

Tricky question. For a faint moment, he wondered if Lelouch was somehow working for L, despite earlier claiming to know nothing about his world. But L knew more about the notebook's capabilities and thought he had the one belonging to the first Kira. In fact, he had Misa's notebook while she had pages torn from both to continue her work. Admitting that the killings had mostly stopped would practically give the association away and expose himself.

"When I was given it for safekeeping, the killings had paused. But they've been going on once again, in the same numbers they were before."

He's getting close to the truth. I can't say much else.

Damn, I closed myself off. I'll have to talk to that red-head to learn more...

"What do you write in the notebook?" That could work. But that would depend...

There was no way to answer the question without raising some form of suspicion. Light would have to lie, and be much more cautious about using it in public again. He'd only opened it once in front of Lelouch, but that seemed to be enough. Again, his mind compared his friend with his enemy.

"I'm sorry, but I can't tell you that. Anything I do with it is considered part of the investigation. You already know more than someone not related to the case should as it is."

For some reason, he thought he heard Ryuk chuckle.

Lelouch was sure Light was lying, and Ryuk's sudden grin only made him more certain.

"I'll just have to leave it at that, then." It made him very angry inside that he had to concede, but there was no possible way he'd be able to do anything more. That notebook could prove very, very useful. But how was he to convince Light what it was worth to the prince?

He needed to find out more. What if it could help create the perfect world for Nunally to live in? Without shedding so much innocent blood?

Lelouch would learn more. But now he needed to save the Geass to ensure that Light would cooperate with him--this chance would not be lost.

He liked Lelouch, but his foolish choice to carry the Death Note around instead of finding a safe place to hide it might have come at a high price. The only way he'd consider trusting him completely would be to make it clear that saying anything about it would result in Lelouch killing himself slowly and painfully.

"It's safer that you don't know anything else. We believe Kira has killed people for knowing too much."

Now, to try and change the subject to something a bit more lighthearted.

"What's your family like? You've mentioned a friend to me, but nobody else."

"That's...a subject I'd rather not discuss..."

He'd certainly talk about Nunnally if Light pressed him, and mention Rollo, but his older siblings were going to be excluded from any conversation.

Truth was, half his family was currently deceased. But if Light didn't know that already, he really didn't need to.

"Sorry. Mine's small - just my parents, my little sister, and me." If he achieved his dream, his father would have to find a safer job, and Sayu would never be in danger.

Light glanced at Ryuk, hoping the shinigami would decide to go away from the boring conversation. But he didn't move.

"No, it' snot your fault. I lived with my younger sister until moving out here...and I haven't seen my younger brother in years."

Both were, of course, true. There wasn't anyone on the campus who knew them, or their ties back in their own world, so there was nothing to worry about.

Lelouch's family was, of course, much larger than Light's. But Light wasn't a prince.

They both had sisters, then. Light made sure to remember that, in case it proved useful later.

"Earlier, you told me that your world has someone like Kira. I'd like to know more about him." It was a reasonable question, even if thinking about what happened to Japan in Lelouch's world made it strange for him to want to find out more.
