Conor Oberst was so drunk that he couldn't finish his encore. At one point he broke down when he forgot the words to Road to Joy and covered his face with his hands for a good minute or so while he remembered. He climbed onto the risers his string section was on and fell backwards onto his cellist. He fucked up chord changes and lyrics. I'm angry. He's my favorite singer and instead of waiting til after the show to get drunk, he made a complete moron of himself.
Fuck rock stars.
However I did talk to (an also drunk) Mike Mogis after the show for a good 10 minutes. He's made some of the best records I've ever heard and basically admitted to me that he knows nothing about recording, that everything he does is completely intuitive and not backed by an actual knowledge of how sound works. I grew a pair of balls and asked him if Presto! does internships since I'm going to school for all that shit now, and he told me not really since it's not a commercial studio, but to get in touch with him once I graduate.
So all that blew my mind, basically. He's basically some dude who latched onto the right songwriter, developed his skills on a bunch of instruments while Conor got better at songwriting, got incredibly rich, and created one of the best recording studios in the midwest that he really only uses to record his friends. Fuck the world. MONEY NOW. STUDER NOW.
