Where is the line between telling a white lie to avoid upsetting someone and just telling a flat out lie?

a white lie is: No you don't look fat in those pants
the truth to that is you can't even button them.... thats a white lie...

flat out lie: No i'm not a douchebag who lies to you about chicks i'm talking to or worse
the truth to that one he's a douchebag who needs to learn to treat his girlie right because shes one of the coolest people i've ever met.

I love you and want to punch him if he's hurting you. He better shape up... i know more people in cleveland then him...;) love you girlie... i'll be making a trip to see you soon. PROMISE!!!!
