Songs What I Does Like: Chapter Thirteen

Oct 11, 2013 18:49

Time for the October edition! I feel like this is a successfully eclectic entry.

"Northern Fall", Korpiklaani (listen here)
Folk metal
Finland
I flippin' love this song. I just want to launch myself into a silly jig-dance every time I hear it. Including it here because it seems appropriate for the season! I'm not that keen on autumn as I don't like what comes after it, but playing this song helps to combat the winter blues. :)

"Santiano", Santiano (listen here)
Folk
Germany
MORE DANCING. Yeeehhhh! A friend of mine introduced me to these guys and there is literally nothing not to love. Nautical-themed folk? Yes please!

"Electric Daisy Violin", Lindsey Stirling (listen here)
Electronic
USA
Holy Freyja this girl is adorable. I. Um. Where was I? Oh yes, right, the music! slowlywakingup shared this link on her journal, and it served as my first introduction to this supremely talented violinist. She does a lot of game music covers, but I chose this one - an original - because she just looks so happy to be playing that I can't help but grin like an idiot whenever I watch it. And her dancing is amazing! I have a massive crush on this girl, in case you hadn't figured.
Bonus: she's just Tweeted this awesome new orchestral version of her song, Elements - with extra Dracula!

"Rulers, Ruling All Things", Midlake (listen here)
Indie rock / folk rock
USA
Ben had his MP3 player hooked up to the car radio as we drove home from the Turisas gig, and this song came on. I was entranced by it - it's so beautiful and so fragile. It has the kind of music - and lyrics - that invoke that kind of bittersweet heartache I really like in a song.

Thinking the world was mine to be lost in
I ran with freedom and sank in between
For I have the path of wonder there before me.

"Broadsword", Turisas (listen here)
Folk metal
Finland
So after seeing my Varangian heroes on Wednesday, naturally I had to include a song of theirs in this post! Originally a Jethro Tull song, I think this is Turisas' finest cover. A lot of people go mental for their version of Boney M's Rasputin, which is totally acceptable because it is an awesome track, but I am really, really very fond of this song.

"Weather The Storm", Insomnium feat. Mikael Stanne (listen here)
Melodic death metal
Finland
Stumbled across this track while I was looking at other videos on YouTube. Gaaaahh I loves it! And thanks to Mikael Stanne's part in it I've decided I really need to start listening to Dark Tranquility again. Mm-hmm. I love the lyrics and the music - ahh I love that refrain. I don't have the vocabulary to accurately describe what it is that I love so much, but listening to it brings out that same yearning ache in my heart that Rulers, Ruling All Things does - although it has been invoked in a completely different way. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? :P

So arm your heart with self-worth
Yet prepare for sorrow and pain
Don't let the fear eat you from inside
Wear your weaknesses with pride

"Violet", Deafhaven (listen here)
Black metal / shoegaze
USA
Apparently this month has been won by Finland and America, ha. My ex suggested that I might like this band, and he was half right; I'm not sure about the vocal parts on some of their music (I enjoy harsh vocals, it's just that these guys seem a bit disjointed to me), but I tracked this song down and I am in love with that easy, dreamy intro. Mmm. Really good to chill too.

music: black metal, music: instrumental, why yes i am a pervert, songs what i does like, music: folk metal, music: folk, fine looking womens
