Vote NO on Proposition 8

Oct 18, 2008 10:14

Attention all California voters! Although I doubt there are many (if any) of you here on my f-list who are considering voting for Proposition 8, I thought I'd post this just in case there is anyone "on the fence" on this issue. If passed, Proposition 8 would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, and add to our state constitution the limitation that marriage is between "one man and one woman." Earlier this year, our Supreme Court made the ground-breaking decision to allow same-sex couples the right to marry, and I do not want to see that right taken away. Not only is this a discriminatory policy which would treat some people differently - and unfairly - under the law, but the supporters of Prop 8 are airing ads filled with scare tactics and bigoted lies about the legislation. Among other things, they're saying that Prop 8 would mean children would be taught to be homosexual in schools, and that churches risk losing their tax exempt status. These things are so untrue as to be ridiculous (and unbelievable), but the fact is that Yes on 8 groups (mostly religious organizations from outside the state of California) have a lot of money to run their hate-filled campaign, and its possible that they'll convince enough people to vote for Prop 8 that it will pass, and overturn the progress we made earlier in the year.

If you live in California, I urge you to have a look at this website, and I further urge you to vote NO on Proposition 8. Preserve marriage equality for all people. Let's help California set a precedent that will make it easier for all GLBT people to have equal rights under the law in all places.

Also, if you have a minute, take a look at this video, created by several local Unitarian Universalist ministers, including happy_potterer (YAY AMY)! :)
